The United States Supreme Court heard arguments this week in another attack from President Trump’s administration on the rights and dignity of immigrants. This time, it could impact the future of 700,000 young people in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program, also referred to as Dreamers.
"The Oregon Union Movement proudly stands behind Dreamers and our allies in the immigrant rights community in their brave defense of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program,” said Oregon AFL-CIO President Graham Trainor. “We strongly condemn any effort - be it through the Supreme Court, Congress or in state legislatures - to criminalize young people in the DACA program or any immigrant worker and we are in this fight until ALL working people have rights on the job and in their communities."
Dreamers represent hope and the idea that anyone can come to the United States of America in search of prosperity. Ending DACA will increase the number of vulnerable workers in our country, which would embolden employers to retaliate against workers who speak out against dangerous working conditions or attempt to organize a union.
As the labor movement, it’s our duty to defend all workers. An injury to one is an injury to all, and with the futures of 700,000 young workers on the line, the stakes could not be higher.
