Oregon Labor Movement Unanimously Endorses Boycott Against Windmill Farms Mushrooms

Seaside, Ore. — At the 2025 biennial Oregon AFl-CIO Convention, delegates from unions across the state unanimously voted to pass a resolution endorsing a boycott of Windmill Farms mushroom products in support of United Farm Workers (UFW) members that have been demanding union recognition for over three years from the Sunnyside, Washington farm.

Unlike workers in most other sectors of the United States’ economy, farm workers are excluded from federal labor law protections like the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) and Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

“The Oregon Labor Movement will always stand in solidarity with farm workers facing exploitation and intimidation from employers who prioritize corporate greed over fair and safe working conditions,” Oregon AFL-CIO President Graham Trainor said. “By endorsing a boycott of Windmill Farms mushroom products, we’re imploring working class Oregonians to use their power by withholding support to influence Windmill Farms to do the right thing and recognize their employees’ union.”

The Oregon AFL-CIO, the state federation of labor unions represents over 300,000 working people across 300 unions in the state. Together, Oregon’s unions are using the resolution to call for a boycott until the company agrees to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement with the UFW and its workers.

“For years, the farm workers at Windmill Mushroom Farm have had one demand: a union,” said UFW President Teresa Romero. “In a just world, a simple majority of the workers wanting a union would be enough to make it happen. Yet because of farm workers’ exclusion from basic labor laws, we are forced to rely on public boycotts to pressure Windmill Farms into doing the right thing. Our boycott strategy would not be possible without the solidarity of the entire labor movement. The UFW is so grateful to the Oregon AFL-CIO and to working families across the Pacific Northwest for taking up the cause of farm workers and standing in solidarity with the Windmill Mushroom Boycott. Together, we will win respect, dignity, and a union contract for the workers who feed us — and we eagerly await the day when we can enjoy union mushrooms on our dinner tables. ¡Si Se Puede!”

Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (PCUN), Oregon’s farm worker union, is also calling for a boycott on Windmill Farms mushroom products.

“The United Farm Workers’ fight is our fight too,” PCUN Executive Director Reyna Lopez said. “PCUN is standing in solidarity with these courageous workers who are simply asking for recognition and respect. We’re thankful to have a partner like the Oregon AFL-CIO to join us in our fight.”

Windmill Farms is a major player in the mushroom farming industry, selling its products to grocery chains throughout Oregon. These mushrooms can be found at grocery stores across the Pacific Northwest, including Safeway, and are labeled as from Sunnyside, WA.

The Oregon AFL-CIO is the statewide federation of labor unions, representing over 300,000 working people.

The United Farm Workers is the nation’s oldest and largest farm workers’ union, with contract agreements protecting thousands of vegetable, berry, winery, tomato, and dairy workers in California, Oregon, New York, and Washington state.

Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste is Oregon’s farm workers union and largest Latino organization in the state.

I found the article about the statewide union boycott really eye-opening it’s powerful to see how workers, employers, and communities intersect in unexpected ways. Staying organized and managing commitments effectively can be tough, which is why some people decide to pay someone to complete my online course to keep things balanced. The solidarity theme in the piece was inspiring.
