Statements by Oregon AFL-CIO President Tom Chamberlain and National AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka on Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch and changes to the Senate rules:
Oregon AFL-CIO President Tom Chamberlain:
“Why did Sen. Mitch McConnell change Senate rules today? Because he and his allies in Washington DC know it is the only way they can appoint their nominee. Working people and unions across the country, including here in Oregon, share a concern that Judge Gorsuch will push for decisions to benefit large corporations over the basic needs of working people. Unfortunately, our concerns are not shared by Sen. McConnell who instead is walking away from bipartisanship by invoking the ‘nuclear option.’
The Oregon AFL-CIO applauds the actions of Sen. Jeff Merkley, who held the Senate floor for over 15 hours to bring attention to the dangerous game being played by Sen. McConnell and his allies.”
National AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka:
“Sen. Mitch McConnell’s rule change is a failure of leadership that stems from a refusal to acknowledge a flawed candidate. The problem isn’t Senate rules; it’s the nominee. Judge Gorsuch is outside the legal mainstream and has a record of decisions that put corporations above the rights and protections of regular people. Any successful nominee to our nation’s highest court should be able to garner broad bipartisan support. Judge Gorsuch is not that nominee. Sen. McConnell’s decision to force Judge Gorsuch through will further skew the court in favor of corporate interests and against working men and women.”
